Basic Social Media Marketing

Simply put, Social Media Marketing (SMM) is a set of methods for gaining website traffic or attention through social media, online communities and community websites. Social media marketing programs usually center on efforts to create content that attracts attention and encourages readers to share it with their social networks.

Although Social Media Marketing is related to Search Engine Marketing (SEM), it differs in several ways. Primarily, SMM focus on driving traffic from sources other than search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, et cetera), though improved search ranking is also a benefit of successful SMM.

SMM is an integral part of an online reputation management (ORM) or Search Engine Reputation Management (SERM) strategy for organizations or individuals who care about their online presence or are looking to repair their online reputation.

Social Media Websites include platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, GooglePlus, YouTube, Pinterest and blogs allow individuals to interact with one another and build relationships – by retweeting or reposting comments made by the product being promoted. By repeating the message, all of the users’ connections are able to see the message, therefore reaching more people. When products or companies join those sites, people can interact with the product or company, allowing them a seemingly more personal interaction.
